Drift in Car is a driving simulation that focuses on the art of drifting, where skilled drivers intentionally oversteer to navigate corners while maintaining control over their vehicles. This distinctive form of drifting is a technique separate from the traditional four-wheel drift used in prestigious racing events like Grand Prix and sports car racing.
Originating in Japan during the 1970s, drifting competitions have gained global popularity. Judges evaluate participants based on criteria such as speed, angle, showmanship, and precision in maneuvering through corners.
The roots of competitive drifting can be traced back to 1996 with one of the earliest documented drift events held at Willow Springs Raceway outside Japan. Today, drifting has evolved into a legitimate motorsport characterized by intense competition among drivers primarily using rear-wheel-drive cars to demonstrate their skills and earn points based on a variety of elements.
Leading the way in this sport is the renowned D1 Grand Prix in Japan, with other notable events including Drift Games Extreme, King of Europe, Drift Masters, British Drift Championship in Europe, WDS in China, RDS in Russia, Formula Drift Asia, and Drift Wars. These competitions showcase drivers' abilities to maintain controlled slides through multiple turns.
Drift cars typically consist of lightweight to moderate-weight rear-wheel-drive coupes and sedans with varying power levels. While rear-wheel drive is the norm, some all-wheel-drive cars have been modified for drifting. Initially permitted in competitions, these cars had restrictions on power distribution to the front wheels but are now prohibited in most drifting events.
Despite the accessibility of Japanese domestic market vehicles worldwide, many drifters opt for local or domestic car models in their respective countries to indulge in this exciting sport. For instance, regions like the United States and the UK have witnessed a surge in imported Japanese vehicles, especially as right-hand-drive options, although domestic and European models also feature prominently within their respective drifting communities.
